In 1908, Em and Al Byrnes

acquired property along the Eel River, 16 miles from the nearest town of Willits. Soon thereafter, they offered the country experience to friends and relations who wished to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. They built their home, a barn, numerous out buildings, cabins, furniture… planted pasture, orchards, gardens…. created an oasis in the oak, fir and madrone clad hillsides. In 1946, Clive and Jessie Adams bought Emandal Farming Resort from them, and brought their family of three sons to the farm from southern California to continue their traditions, while adding many of their own. Once grown, their youngest son, Clive, Jr. opted to stay, marry, and raise four children, at Emandal-A Farm on a River. Today Tamara Adams, following in the footsteps of her in-laws and her late husband, continues at the helm, ably assisted by her daughter Kashaya Adams. Tamara and Clive’s other children and their partners, Buffalo Adams and Claudine Williams, Zarya (Adams) and Mike Plessas, and Malanyon and Sarah Adams, return periodically to augment year-round and seasonal staff with various projects and special events.
