Oak Woodlands in June

Kate Marianchild

June 25-29, 2025

During this ArtStay, we will spend our mornings wandering and wondering through Emandal's woodland and riparian areas, stopping to familiarize ourselves with plants and animals; fungi and lichens; nests and burrows; signs and sounds. In addition to identifying organisms, Kate will share her knowledge of their lives, survival strategies, anatomical characteristics, and social structures, with an emphasis on their interrelationships with other species. In the afternoons, we will have quiet time for observing, listening, journaling, drawing, swimming, reading, and/or relaxing. We'll come back together before dinner to discuss our experiences and pore through books and other resources for answers to burning questions.. Click here for more information!

Quilted Landscapes
Laura Fogg

Expect this to be a fun, creative, beginner-friendly, out-of-the-box class. You do not need to have any quilting skills besides basic knowledge of how to do freehand machine quilting on your home sewing machine, nor do you need to be a recognized artist. You will discover the “artist within” as you play with the fabrics of your choice to create a small (about 2’ by 3’) collage wall quilt. Click here for more information!

Jody Gehrman

Have you heard of Chekov's gun, but aren't sure how it can help you? Does your dialogue sometimes go nowhere or lack nuance? Here's your chance to learn some of the key principles playwrights have employed for thousands of years and use them to rev up your fiction or memoir project. Join playwright, novelist, and college professor Jody Gehrman as we explore some of the most useful tools in the playwright's arsenal and discuss how to apply them to your novel, memoir, or short story. This is an invitation to join me to explore the beautiful Emandal farm. My tools are basic and easy to transport: a 5x8 inch bound sketchbook, a mechanical pencil and a good eraser, pens in a couple of sizes. I believe everyone can draw, and everyone can learn the tricks of watercolor and ink line. My only caution is that journaling can be addictive. I just counted over 50 on my shelf!
