Emandal-A Farm on a River
lies at the base of Mt. Sanhedrin, the tallest peak in the Coastal Range of California, 16 miles NE of Willits, Mendocino County, California, adjacent to the main fork of the Eel River, cornering on the Sanhedrin Wilderness, at the end of a county road.
Getting to the Farm
Do NOT use your GPS or Google Maps. These directions will save you time, energy and angst.
From the Sacramento area, Emandal is easily accessible by Highway 20 which joins Highway 101 fourteen miles south of Willits. It is a little over a half-hour drive from Willits to Emandal. This varies according to the driver and how many cows are on the road.
140 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101 (about a 3.5 hour drive from the Golden Gate Bridge), take the first Willits exit; turn left at stop sign, go under freeway, and merge onto Main St. Continue towards the north end of town. At the fourth stoplight, you will make a right hand turn onto Commercial Street. Set your car’s trip mileage odometer now: 16 miles
In the first block, you will pass the Noyo Theatre on your right, the new firehouse on your left. In the second block, the City Park on your left, the police station and City Hall on your right. Continue straight, literally.
When you are 1-1/2 miles from Willits, you will come to a Y intersection, with the former O’Leary’s Red Barn Feed Store off to your right, and Still Water Meditation Center on your left corner. Veer left. You will now be on Hearst Willits Road (County Road 306). This road will curve again to your right.
When you are almost out of the valley, you will come to the junction of 306 Hearst-Willits Road and 308 Canyon Road. Continue straight on 308 Canyon Road. You will cross a small single lane bridge (3.9 miles from Willits) and start up the canyon. Canyon Road is paved all the way but gets narrow in some spots, so be careful!
About 7.4 miles from Willits you will come to another Y in the road. Turn left and go across a cement bridge. The road now becomes Tomki Road. Continue on Tomki Road until you come to a T intersection (9.1 miles from Willits). If you were to go straight, you would run into someone’s driveway. If you go left, you end up in Tomki Creek. Therefore, take a sharp right hand turn up the mountain. You are now back on Hearst Willits Road.
Go up and down and around and about on this road – past Foster Mountain Road (veer left) – until you reach the Eel River (it will be on your left-hand side with a sheep farm on its north bank). About this time you’ll also see a little cabin and then a home on your right. As you continue straight, you’ll notice a big silver bridge to your left (do not go left over the bridge).
Directly in front of you the road curves left towards the bridge; you’ll see a group of mailboxes on your right, along with a Little Free Library and an Emandal sign on a tree, stay right. The road splits again just a short distance after the first Y. Stay to the right. Follow this road past the Emandal Sign, past the School House on your right, the road to the Strawbale House on your left… all the way to Emandal. The road ends at the farm. Follow the signs to the appropriate parking area, thence to Check-in.
If you have questions, call 707.459.9252, but realize that cell phone reception ends once you leave Tomki Creek. Arrival after 7:30pm is unacceptable.
