Glass Mosaics

Instructor:  Elizabeth Raybee

Skill Level:  Appropriate for All Skill Levels

Art Stay I:  August 17-21, 2020

Class Enrollment Status:  Accepting Students

Learn the fun and beautiful art of glass mosaics!  During this workshop you’ll be introduced to the basic tools, techniques, stylistic and color selection, and materials needed to create your own masterpiece.  For those more experienced students, Elizabeth will help develop the craft further, including planning for other mosaic projects upon  returning home.

Items to mosaic during the workshop will include glass bowls, pitchers, plates and picture-glass or opaque surfaces for wall pieces. The materials will include a broad selection of  stained glass, mirror, vitreous glass, millefiori, melted & fused glass of many shapes and a small assortment of smalti bits. The workshop will also cover safety issues, including glass cutting and clipping, and appropriate protective gear.

Various adhesives will be introduced,  with instruction on grouting techniques, and ultimately, the final wiping, cleaning and polishing necessary for a stellar work of art.

Additional Supply Fee:  $30 for instructor provided materials.

Additional Supplies Participants Should Bring to the Workshop:  Rubber gloves & clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.  If you have something at home you’ve been thinking about tiling – a small table-top, lamp or window? – you’re welcome to bring that to mosaic. Once your registration has been confirmed, please contact me to see if the materials you would like to bring will be appropriate for your class project.

Workshop Reviews

“Elizabeth, You are the best, the best.  Thank you so very much for sharing your incredible talent with us would-be mosaic-ers.  You are obviously a great and accomplished artist but your teaching skills are outstanding.  You were patient and attentive to us and I (being a nurse) really did appreciate the caution you instilled in us re: the use of the respirators when we were mixing up the grout powder.  The amount of  materials you schlepped and shared with us was more than generous. I can’t thank you enough.” – Terry Rodriguez

“Thank you for the lovely weekend!  It was truly  wondrous in so many ways. Big fun!  I have the mosaic bug, for sure.”  – Sharon Paltin, M.D.

Elizabeth RaybeeAbout the Instructor

Perhaps her childhood–“living in Detroit where my folks had a junkyard” – gave mosaic artist Elizabeth Raybee her appreciation for things broken. Today, the internationally recognized artist spends her days breaking tile for a living, fashioning bits and pieces of ceramic and glass into ornate, decorative and whimsical works of art.

She has been a guest lecturer and visiting artist for San Francisco Open Studios, Oregon College of Art and Craft, the Sanchez Art Center, The University of Sarawak (Maylasia), the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the City of Breckinridge, Colorado.

Raybee’s work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Crafts Museum, the National Jewish Museum, San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens and Museo Italiano, Museum of Man in San Diego, Chicago’s Navy Pier and Ukiah’s Grace Hudson Museum. Her commissions include the San Francisco Arts Commission, Laguna Honda Hospital, Eden Housing Inc., The San Geronimo Valley Cultural Center, Willits Skate Park and numerous private homes. Her work has appeared in Bay Area newspapers, on the cover of Artweek Magazine, in television spots and in contemporary mosaic books. Raybee continues to create residential works for people locally and out of the area.
