Emandal sits close to the base of Mt. Sanhedrin, the highest peak in our Coast Range of Mendocino County… What amazing views other folks have of this magnificent mountain! Here are a few from high up on the west side of Willits, northwest of Willits off Highway 20, and just outside the city limits.
The rain continues….. Fortunately, we’ve been able to work up enough rows (2) in the garden between storms to get about 3400 onions planted….. 7 different varieties of beets….. carrots. Raspberries have gotten lots of manure and chips…… strawberries put in the ground last fall have been weeded and are coming up beautifully! Dill, arugula, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, chard…. poppies by the score! The laying hens keep giving us more and more eggs as the light increases…. yellow yolks extraordinaire. Nasturtiums are blooming in the hoop house, tomatoes are so large they’re threatening to fall over!
As he has been doing for years, our friend Sean showed up for the annual fundraiser for our local ‘hot meals for the hungry’ group…… “Sip Some Soup!” I made a bunch of bread in the inside ovens…. he used the wood-fired brick oven for sour-dough. So good! Everything was consumed or sold, with all proceeds going to the non-profit.
He had to be up early in the morning to feed the fire, and watch as the fog lifted up from the valley floor.
Spring Break brought Zarya and James to the farm…. with numerous trips to the river for rock skipping…..
….and for help with making soap for the summer (Dandelions are blooming profusely right now…. perfect since we’ve now used up the dandelion infused oil for some of the bars created…)
We’ve had one work weekend this year….. February got rained out. The March one had some liquid, but a new trail was begun, weeds pulled, shade structure erected, more roses pruned, peony cages placed, berry wire situated. One more this month…. with hopes for a new apple tree perch, tree lights strung, and of course, more garden rows prepped!
