A few weeks ago, as we headed into the chicken house late in the day, to gather eggs, we were surprised… shocked might be the word…. to find a red-tailed hawk smack-dab in the middle of the room, feasting on one of our “rarest of the rare” five month old white pullets. We theorize that he got his talons imbedded into the chicken (a very LARGE chicken) just outside the chicken-house door, and while trying to escape, the hen dragged him inside.
Malanyon and I both sided with the hawk…… unfortunate to lose the chicken, but not good to lose a hawk, either. He was easy to catch…. a bit worn-out, we surmise…. placed him into a wire cage, (along with the dead chicken), and left him inside overnight. In the morning, we took the cage into the field, opened the door, and left him. Within the hour, he was gone.
Sean came up to make sourdough loaves for our annual “Sip Some Soup” fundraising event for Willits Daily Bread… and honored us with a Winter Pizza Dinner. No snow or ice this time…. Jessie, our office manager, has proven to be adept at many things around here…. and it looks as if she’s going to be a real asset this summer on pizza night!
Along with the bread, I entered a soup: Moraccan Red Lentil. The vote counters said it was extremely close, but I came in second…. preserved lemon and all.
Linden helped me by glazing the Carob Prune loaves. His cousin, James, and friend Cora, assisted with carrot grating.
