The Basic Qualifications and Expectations are the same for this position as for the others (see "Essential Expectations"), but in addition the Facilities Assistant must possess a valid California Drivers License, or be willing to get a California License once hired.
The Facilities Assistant is a handy person who likes to work independently, is self-motivated and has good time management skills. His/her role is crucial to the day to day operations of Emandal. This person is good with tools, and knows how to use, care for and repair both simple tools and, ideally, more complicated farm equipment. Prior experience with woodworking, minor construction projects, plumbing and/or pipe repair is appreciated but not required.
Lawn care is a major part of this job, as are trips to town and certain regular or daily activities like taking out garbage and recycling. Another main responsibility is animal caretaking. With some assistance, he or she will look out for the general health and welfare of animals (ostriches, goats, chickens, cows, cats, and pigs) including feeding and watering, mucking, monitoring feed supplies, etc. Since we do milk a cow every day, twice a day, he/she must learn willingly and be able to teach others. Other tasks listed below will come up more irregularly/infrequently, and job duties will change over the season with changing business priorities.
Responsibilities
- Lawn/Grounds Maintenance:
- Mowing, weed-eating, setting up sprinklers, raking, etc
- Procuring Supplies:
- Drive business vehicle to town for supplies
- Communicate clearly with farm staff and with business owners in town in order to obtain the correct supplies
- Unload and distribute supplies in appropriate places
- Animal Care:
- In the Spring, FA will be responsible for 1 day of weekend animal chores; in addition he/she will lead milking activity with Naturalist
- In the Summer, FA will be responsible for animal chores (except during time off)
- Monitor animal feed levels and communicate those needs to appropriate person
- Procure kittens for our summer adoption program
- Eradication of barnyard pests.
- General Maintenance:
- Assist with projects involving woodworking, electrical, plumbing or painting
- Moving of kitchen/dining room or farm equipment as necessary (from chairs and tables to building supplies)
- Trail clearing and maintenance
- Trash and recycling
- Other Duties:
- Assist with dish washing and kitchen cleaning when needed
- Specific food preparation tasks, like ice cream churning and topping pizzas
- Be helpful and courteous to guests
Compensation
Minimum $235/week, plus room and board. Tips during Family Camp/Groups.
Work Schedule
40 hours a week.
Environmental Ed schedule (April-early June): M-F with one day of weekend chore duty.
Family Camp/Group schedule (mid June-mid September): 5.5 days, weekends required.
Dates Of Employment
March 30 – Early October
Preference is given to applicants who can stay for this entire period, but we will still consider applications for shorter time periods. End date in particular may be flexible dependent on needs of the business and staff member.
