Each year we make buns for Thanksgiving. This year, instead of the Library getting the proceeds, we gave the money to the Community Foundation’s Disaster Fund for Mendocino County. Although we had numerous smoke-filled days this fall, the closest the Northern California fires got to us was 8 miles….. darned close enough! The concept of losing one’s home is not something I have ANY desire to experience.
Kashaya was here to help, along with Michelle and Melissa (two former Emandal employees still living and working in Willits), and Zarya, my oldest daughter down from the Sierra Valley, and my grandson, James, now eight years old.
We made around 1600 buns!…. give or take a few dozen, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I couldn’t make just one variety, of course. All had organic, unbleached white flour. Some had potato, some winter squash, and some pear puree left over from pear butter making. With all the assistance, I didn’t shape a roll! But I did bake them…..
We offered a baker’s dozen and a jar of jam. Each order was picked up on Wednesday, between noon and 1:30pm, outside the library in town. People even came from Ukiah to get them! Delightedly, we were able to give the foundation $2200.
Below, you can see the last jar of jam being poured for this season (Life is a Bowl of Cherries)…. well over 5000 jars! Yikes! And on the side of the refrigerator, our list of accomplishments. (Needless to say, we celebrated with champagne after that last jar was poured! Whew!) There should be plenty of everything left this coming summer!
